As historian Elizabeth Gillespie McRae instructed me on the podcast, white segregationist ladies shaped racist historical narratives for thousands and thousands of community school pupils by their roles on textbook selection committees in the Jim Crow South, and led fights for school segregation in the North, masked in the coloration-blind language of “choice” and “neighborhood schools.”
2nd, progressives also want to acknowledge the energy of the classic nuclear family members in shaping white women’s perceived political passions. Conservatives have expended a long time positioning the white, nuclear family members as an best deserving of reverence and safety. There’s a rationale for this: It pays off for them in the voting booth. Married white women of all ages favor Republican candidates at better charges than their unmarried counterparts.
