A distinguished Singapore businessman has mentioned he will exit his financial investment in a tobacco company linked to the Myanmar military services, soon after the military deposed the country’s democratically elected federal government in a coup last week.
Lim Kaling, the co-founder and director of Hong Kong-shown gaming team Razer, stated in a statement on Tuesday that he was a minority shareholder in Virginia Tobacco Company by way of RMH Singapore Pte Ltd, which owns 49 % of the Myanmar business.
The relaxation of Virginia Tobacco is owned by Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited (MEHL), a single of two conglomerates run by the country’s armed service, according to a 2019 United Nations report.
“Recent activities [in Myanmar] lead to me grave issue,” Lim claimed in the emailed assertion, which adopted an on the net petition calling on him to lower his exposure.

Lim’s announcement arrived just after an on the internet petition began by activist group Justice for Myanmar urged Razer to take away Lim from its board if he did not end his enterprise ties with the Myanmar armed forces.
Lim did not reference the petition in his assertion, which received 851 signatories, but the activist team claimed a victory.
