Virtually six decades immediately after a community bakery moved its ovens from downtown Bloomington to Uptown Standard, the business is prepping to open up its kitchen area yet again from a new downtown storefront.

Sugar Mama Bakery is on observe to open someday in early July from the former Subway restaurant, 109 W. Jefferson St., on the courthouse square. It will close its Normal locale, 116 W. North St., in advance of August.

I caught proprietor Susie Tod on Tuesday as she and workers were unloading and going baking supplies into the room, which options uncovered brick, natural products and loads of normal mild.

“It’s not going to be a cookie-cutter layout,” Tod joked with me as she moved a stand-mixer off a counter.

Tod shut her past downtown Bloomington spot, 405 N. Key St., in 2015 to target her initiatives on the Normal locale.

The bakery, which specializes in artisan and customized-buy baked items, was first commenced all over 2010 when Tod and then-companion Krista Gaff started baking out of Gaff’s home.

Tod’s system had been to open up the new Bloomington shop on July 2, but that day will most likely be pushed back again, she stated. She’s been met with some construction delays brought on by the weekend’s storms and continue to needs to put in some products.

Other than incorporating yet another choice for coffee and baked items to downtown Bloomington, the business will fill a storefront that has sat vacant because mid-2019.
